Air New Zealand debuts ‘Hobbit’ themed Airline Safety video

Must see video, it’s fantastic! Peter Jackson even makes a cameo appearance!

Tiny Purgatory snippet

Because I needed more lighthearted Purgatory fic and badass Cas, and this exchange isn’t fitting in any of my larger projects. Although I reserve the right to repurpose it if I do find a place for it.

Featuring Benny, Dean, Castiel, and Dean and Castiel’s sexual tension.

They stare at each other for several more moments. Benny wonders if he should start timing them. Finally Castiel says softly, “We are friends, Dean. I suppose I…suck at it as well.”

Dean looks a little bit lost for what to say after all that, so Benny clears his throat. “I think this is the part where you tell him you want to fuck him.”

Dean breaks the staring contest to glare at him.

“That you want him to fuck you?” Benny suggests.

Dean continues to glare.

“All of the above? You want him to make sweet lo—mph!” Suddenly there’s a hand clamped over his mouth, and the angel’s staring at him from two inches away.

“You are very annoying,” Castiel says. Benny tries to bite him (because seriously, vampire), but the angel has his other hand firmly holding his jaw in place.

After a moment the angel shoves him away, and Benny continues taking several more prudent steps back. It’s not that he’d been precisely unaware of just what he was dealing with here, but the reminder that the angel is still an angel…well, it would strike fear into the cold dead heart of anyone with sense.

Dean, of course, is eyeing the angel with something that Benny’s pretty sure isn’t fear. “Damn, Cas, that was pretty badass.” They share another one of those long looks, and Dean mutters, “Just don’t leave again. Okay?”

8x06 Southern Comfort aka Ode to Dean (and Bobby)

Wow, that was a good episode.

Lots of good points here, especially about Dean choosing what to say because that’s what he can control. Interesting implications for how Dean thinks and deals with feelings! And I appreciate the discussion of Garth-as-Bobby being an oversimplified view. It’s a reassuring thought in terms of all the characters involved, and also a nice bit of continuity plot-wise for the show, because someone needs to do Bobby’s job.

The more I think and read about it, the better this episode gets. And I already liked it in the first place, despite my still-mixed feelings about Garth.

All Hell Breaks Loose (Part II) x Southern Comfort

asdfghjkl! As painful as this comparison is it’s actually such a good thing that it has happened. Way back in the first .gif, Dean tended to assume all the wrong on himself for everything that happened. It’s what drove Dean to that deal helped by a good dose of John’s doing both while growing up and by making a deal for Dean himself. Instead in this episode we see part of Dean’s feelings and it’s a complete reversal. *YOU* LET ME DOWN. It is incredibly refreshing for me to see this happen because maybe - maybe - we’ll see Dean move on from that sort of guilty that has suffocated him so much in recent seasons. Even though he was under the influence of the specter he’s finally vocalizing what he has the right to vocalize: that he was personally hurt by things done to him. And it’s not about blaming anybody. It is about the fact that feeling hurt and standing up for himself is not something Dean knows how to do. From his childhood to the entire span of the series, we’ve been shown how Dean can’t and isn’t allowed to stand by himself, by his hurt and anger. Something that got beautifully expressed in the line nobody cares that you’re broken. Especially from season 4 on huge things were happening that didn’t allow Dean to take a breather and work through his feelings of hurt and disappointment: he had to forget them because the world depended on Dean and Sam to be united. It got worse in season 6 and 7 when again there were more important things than Dean being broken and that Dean was called to fix. It’s an aspect of Supernatural that I have always been conflicted over and that I wanted to see explored and something that I feel on a very deep level. I often see it addressed as a complaint against the show: that it never really deals with Dean’s issues, that it never allows Dean to be ‘fixed’ (in the broadest sense because certain things can’t be fixed). So this scene in this episode and the fact that they are showing that Dean has deep issues and that Dean believes he has a right to that anger is pure gold to me.

Of course I’m a bit worried by two aspects. One is that Dean didn’t remember what happened when he was influenced by the coin. I’ve seen people say that Dean was lying about not remembering but I don’t see how when all the previous victims said that they don’t remember anything about what happened while influenced. I don’t know if it changes anything: all I need is to know that Dean feels those things he said and considering how more open he’s being post-purgatory he may well finally express them in a constructive way. The second worry is given by Garth’s speech about putting the past in the past and by Sam’s ultimatum: move on or I will. Because we’ve seen, and it was the whole point of the episode, what happen when things don’t get talked out: they fester and they don’t get solved. So  while I’m happy to see that maybe the show will finally put Dean’s issue in the foreground instead of relegating them to the background, I’m a bit worried that nothing substantial will be done about it.

Some of the victims said they remembered bits and pieces, right? So maybe on some level Dean does remember. And even if not, I’ve been getting the impression this season that he’s a little more aware of his own feelings, even if he’s deliberately suppressing them, so whether he remembers or not I suspect he knows what he’s feeling. At any rate, Sam heard all this and wasn’t under any influence, so now he definitely knows how Dean’s feeling. Not quite as significant, maybe, but still important.

Regardless, I’m so glad Dean finally said all this out loud. Even if it took being possessed to do it. And I’m also glad Sam pushed back at him, because much as I want Sam to understand his brother’s point of view (and vice versa), he wouldn’t be Sam if he just accepted everything without challenge.

Joining the hope that this will all be dealt with in a substantial way, because it’s about time for Dean’s issues to be put in the foreground. And not just because he’s my favorite—at this point, he can’t move forward as a character, and by extension the people who care about him can’t fully move forward, and the whole plot would be at least somewhat held back by not dealing with this.

nyokala:

You should have looked for me when I was in Purgatory.

#he hasn’t had a chance to feel angry about what happened in season 6 and 7. he’s had to fix things #nobody cares that you’re broken

Had to pull out Ash’s tags because this is a huge thing for me here. Dean’s never been given a chance to deal with what happened for the past 2 years (actually 3 counting the year he mourned Sam’s death in Cicero). It’s been a crazy mad dash to deal with huge devastation and then try to fix things with no backup because all of his friends were dead — to lose Sam, to get him back only to find out he wasn’t all back and that he had to find a way to restore him, to lose Cas, to lose Bobby, to find Cas but only to lose him again to insanity, to go up against the Leviathans, to go to Purgatory and basically lose himself.

I honestly don’t know how Dean is still standing. Also, I love the use of the “nobody cares that you’re broken” tag because as we’ve meta’ed about a lot, the line says so much about how Dean has come to understand his own trauma — it’s Dean reflecting on himself in so many ways, feeling alone in dealing with his brokenness. How he’s always been told to suck it up, to get over his brokenness, because there were more important things to worry about. Dean is made to feel as if he has to fix everyone and everything else, but he’s never been made to feel that he too is important enough to be fixed.

Because this scene broke my heart (in a good way, though) and I felt the need to share. Also, let’s all just take a moment to appreciate Jared’s acting.
Now actually talk to her, Sam. Please?

One thing that makes me really upset about this is how she says he just enlisted and left without even talking to her about it and what does Sam do in the first episode? Sneaks out in the middle of the night, presumedly without talking to her about it. Yikes.

I’m still holding out hope that they did actually talk, and what we saw wasn’t necessarily what we think we saw. Or at least not the full story. Either that, or he’ll realize over the course of the season that what their relationship was missing was him being open and honest—something that won’t come easy to him, but it would be an interesting arc for him to learn how to share the weird parts of his life with his civilian girlfriend.

You could be totally right! I hope you are, it’s just to me the scene we saw in the first ep doesn’t really make it look good. I hope they meet again and hash everything out and Sam (and everyone else) learns that some degree of honesty is really essential for keeping relationships. I want Sam to be honest with Amelia and tell her all about Dean and John and Bobby and Cas and Jess and everyone he’s lost and loved and for her to be honest about Don and the other people in her life. She picked up and left after he died, she must have had some family. Parents, siblings, friends and his family too. Either they’re estranged and that’s an interesting story in and of itself or she just left, not unlike Sam and I’m wondering if they know where she is? I really want to know more about this and we’ve barely scratched the surface. And (promo spoiler alert) all the stuff with Cas coming back insisting Dean doesn’t know the whole story. That might be true, Dean might be the one with faulty memories or we know that Cas is being manipulated by some unseen force so maybe he’s got the faulty memories or they both do? Learning honesty is going to be a big thing this season. Especially with everything that went down in Southern Comfort. I’m so excited! :D

Oh, I like the idea of Amelia being estranged from her family! (…that made me sound like a horrible person. For literary symmetry, I swear! Um.) I agree the scene in 8.01 didn’t look good; I’m probably just being overly optimistic as usual. But I do hope they work it out in the future. Basically, everything you said is exactly what I want to see this season. :) Learning honesty definitely seems like it’s going to be important, and I like that connection with Dean and Cas—honesty not just in what one chooses to say, but in thoughts, perception, relating to outside forces. Wow, this season just keeps getting more awesome! I love it.

EDIT:

Oh man Wednesday’s going to be SO GOOD. “Good” in the sense of “Oh god oh god we’re all gonna die.” Not sure whether to party in anticipation or preemptively hide under the covers with a box of tissues.
I really do love how enthusiastic this show’s cast and crew are about interacting with the fans. They know how excited we get about nuggets like this, and they like seeing us excited, so they keep feeding us new things to get excited over. I’d say it makes TV more like live theater, except in some ways it’s even more interactive than that. They’re making the show for us, after all, and it’s nice to see how much they consider us a part of the show. And if they tease us sometimes (constantly), well, just think how boring it would be if they didn’t.

For the record, if I ever make one post and disappear, it’s most likely because Tumblr decided to show me any one of a number of delightful error messages and stop working for an indeterminate amount of time. (Restarting the computer usually fixes it, but when it’s already into the wee hours of the morning I generally just go to bed.)
